Stacking Opportunities

There are many people in the who simply do not have the guidance or support in overcoming family struggles or other circumstances to find a path to a career at a company like Microsoft. Sometimes I wondered if my path at Microsoft was a really a stroke of luck and that I could might not have been where I am today due to some simply choices back when I was younger.

My upbringing was not a traditional stable trajectory of a normal family in the culture of elite universities or well-off families. I know that I am not unique in my experience. However, if I can offer a way to help others succeed and pursue a career in technology it will improve his or her life.

“Stacking opportunity” is something which comes from the idea that as you go through your current life situations you must ask for fundamental lessons from those around you, and never settle for the simple answer(s).

In a practical example, while I was a high school student making minimum wage at a restaurant as a bus boy. I decided to take an introduction to web design at school and learned some basic web and html skills. I recognized that the restaurant I worked at had a website. I asked the owners if they ever needed to update the website. Turns out they did, and small steps of manual labor at minimum wage then resulted in $150/hr updating a website instead of my regular roles. I was able to update the website in a timely manner, then I was able to approach other restaurants and build website(s) using the tools and skills I learned. Thus resulting in “stacking opportunities” on top of each other.

This is not guaranteed to happen for everyone as of course it requires time to build the relationship with the restaurant owners and also learn the fundamentals of Web Design. But the main point of this concept and the posts I share are intended to help sharpen senses to ask and recognize what you can do next.
